The Traditional Mat Hooking Course was a joint initiative between the Labrador Straits Development Corporation, Southeastern Aurora Development Corporation, the Department Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, Craft Producers and the Rug Hooking Guild of Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

This new course provided the craft producers with the skills and experience to develop fine crafts that are truly representative of coastal Labrador , therefore, instating a sense of value and pride, knowing that they actually can make living from the crafts they are producing.

 

Under the Traditional Mat Hooking Course the following objectives was achieved: 

  • Advanced skills development for coastal Labrador craft producers in the area of Traditional Mat Hooking
  • Development of new high end crafts based on local natural and cultural heritage of the region – part of overall heritage tourism industry in our regions/overall economic development goals of the regions
  • Generation of wealth from sales of high end craft products not available anywhere else, and
  • Revitalization of the Traditional Mat Hooking first introduced to coastal Labrador by Dr Grenfell in the early 1900’s.
