In January, 2008 the Labrador Straits Development Corporation (LSDC) hosted a Fisheries Forum and the following topics was discussed and included; The Fishery of the Future, Occupation Health and Safety within the Fishing Industry, Changing Weather Patterns, Fishery outlook from the Labrador Fisherman’s Union Shrimp Company Limited, Small Vessel Requirements under the Canada Fishing Act, FFAW fishery issues and Risk Management and Insurance.
This was initiated on the behalf of the fishing industry and the Fisheries Working Group established by the LSDC to address fisheries issues and concerns. The Fishery Forum is part of the LSDC statement of work that was negotiated with the Department of Innovation Trade and Rural Development (ITRD) and Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency (ACOA) on an annual basis.
The main focus of the forum was to prepare fish harvester through a transfer of information on the changes that will be imposed on the fishing industry by both levels of government and the insurance companies.
