The Labrador Straits Development Corporation (LSDC) in partnership with Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture (DFA), Labrador Fishermen's Union Shrimp Company Limited (LFUSCL) and the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador (MUN)  conducted a market survey that determined if it would be feasible to produce Bacon Wrapped Scallops in Economic Zone 5 generating employment for local residents and fish harvesters.

The objective of this pre-commercial experiment was to determine the market potential for Bacon Wrapped Scallops in and outside the Labrador Straits area. A market survey was designed in conjunction with the partners identified above and Memorial University, under their Academic Partnering Program, executed the survey and prepared final report.

The direct benefits to the industry as a result of this initiative were:

  • Increase in commercial harvesting.
  • Increase in work force in the processing sector.
  • Identification of market potential in side and outside of Labrador Straits.
  • A direct financial impact on the local economy.
